PPA Goodness

I had been it somewhat of a rut for the few months leading up to this new year. Thankfully, I had a couple great clients that got me through the Christmas season.

I had no desire for my life to be so mundane and ordinary, but the logistics of my work schedule and everything else did not leave much room for creative inspiration.

In order make this year different, I needed a fresh start and to be re-inspired. I couldn't think of a better place to get rejuvenated and geek out with my kind of people than the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Annual Convention. They just happened to be meeting in New Orleans, lucky me.

I attended about four seminars each day for three days, not to mention the hours I had to take in the Imaging EXPO. You cannot imagine the amount of vendors available to see; it was completely overwhelming and tempting all at the same time. I was in my own, personal geek heaven of photo equipment, props, gifts, gadgets, software, and more.

I gained so much from each of the seminars I attended. The speakers were phenomenal and funny and so willing to share their expertise. Needless to say, I gained inspiration, vision, and lots of practical business knowledge.

Weddings...Oh My!

Back in July, a couple of my friends were getting married and asked me to be their photographer. I honestly tried to talk them out of it, explaining to them that I'm a portrait photographer instead. Weddings really intimidate me. They were set on me doing it, so I agreed to be there on their big day, camera in hand.

Oh yeah! Did I mention that shortly after agreeing to this, I broke my finger. Meaning, I was shooting my first wedding in over two years with my left arm in a cast. I was nuts but determined to come through for them. I enlisted the help of my good friend Joe, who kept me calm and was my second shooter. I could not have done it without his help.

Their wedding was beautiful and incorporated many different elements. You see, Blanca is from Bolivia, so some of her family was there who mainly spoke Spanish. They were doing ministry at a deaf church in the city, so there was sign language throughout the ceremony. I was happy to be there and experience all these different people coming together to celebrate their union.

Even though I'm six months late in posting these, congratulations Corey and Blanca! Here are a few of my favorites.

Cross Processing Take Two

I confess:

I like people.
The good ones are almost like a drug to me.
I can say no to tasks but rarely to my friends.
When I do say no, I'm afraid I'll miss something really fun.
I talk too much, and that is exponentially worse when I'm having a good time.
I have a tendency to stay up WAY past when I should on a work night.
When I'm responsible and leave early, I feel bummed.

I'm a friendaholic!

To survive 2012, I need to detox a little. Some will be by choice and some by necessity, but it must happen.

So, if you're my friend and you see my lapsing into old habits; tell me to go home! :) And if anything fun happens after I leave...tell me later.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one, but stay tuned because I've got a backlog of thoughts and photography to share. Twenty-eleven was an eventful year; bring on 2012.

Cross Processing Take One

I work at a photo store, so I'm constantly surrounded by artists. Some of them are not so good and others are amazing. When I see other people making great art, it really challenges me to learn new techniques and be better at what I do.

I still have my 35mm film camera from back when I was in college, and we were still cranking out images in the dark room. Nothing quite compares to watching your image appear in the chemicals. I'm glad I had the opportunity to process my own film in a dark room and create images the old fashion way.

So, I've been experimenting with film again.

First, I had to buy some batteries for my camera, and then there was that pesky roll that was only half shot from three years ago. Thankfully, my tried and true Canon Rebel still works, and I was able to finish my roll of black and white film.

My co-worker suggested I try shooting a roll of E-6 Slide film. The only catch is that no one in New Orleans processes E-6 film. The only way to get it developed is to process it in the C-41 chemicals, and it produces some pretty cool results. The images tend to have a lot of contrast and grain, as you'll see. I shot this roll blind, meaning, I had no clue what results I would get. In addition, every time I snapped a shot, I tried to look at the back of the camera...then I remember I was shooting film. Ha!

Pumpkin Carving Results

I have several friends who really enjoy carving pumpkins, or maybe just the atmosphere of friends hanging out and scooping pumpkin guts together. It is always a good time, especially when one of your friends decides to make masterpiece pumpkin carvings of their friends.

This time around I decided not to carve one myself. It's a lot of pressure for a creative person like me, and it is really hard work to do anything other than a simple pumpkin face. :)

Thankfully, my friend Cody carved some special pumpkins this year. His imagery kept me in stitches, so I just had to share his amazing skills with all of you.

Adoption is Everywhere!

...and I'm happy about knowing that more children will be with loving families.

It feels like everyone I know is adopting, fostering, or giving money to those who are. It's exciting, and I'm a tiny bit jealous too. I'm still waiting to hopefully have a family of my own someday, but until then I can make fun things for them to give away.

I wanted to craft not too long ago because I had borrow a Cricut from a friend, and I was able to cut all sorts of festive shapes and letters from scrapbook paper with ease. Hooray! However, there is absolutely no more space in my room for any more stuff. There's no current wall space to display what I already have, so I did the next best thing.

I made something to give away on someone's adoption blog; I just assumed it would be my friend Cole. I have yet to frame it and give it to her though.

Until then, here's what it looks like, and maybe you can win it on her blog sometime in the near future.

I have a confession to make...

I doodle in church. I know, I know, but don't judge me before I explain myself.

Sitting still and staying quiet does not come naturally to me. I have NEVER been know as quiet...EVER! When I was a kid, I would marvel at how people could keep their eyes closed for the entire invitation time; I certainly could not.

You can imagine that if the 3-5 minute invitation was a stretch; the sermon was like a marathon for me. One where I usually got in trouble for talking and then eventually punished for talking too much.

I have never known my life without drawing; it is part of who I am. It's only fair that it seeps into ever area of my life...even church.

I'm proud to admit that I still draw in church. It actually keeps me focused, quiet, and more attentive to what is being said. It has a way of quieting my soul to allow me to hear God, instead of noticing that someone else has just gotten up to make their way to the bathroom. :)

I used to just draw on whatever scrap paper was available and ended up tossing most of my artwork when I would clean out my Bible. Thankfully, I started bringing a sketchbook with me each week, so I can hang onto the creations that are birthed during the sermons.

I wanted to begin sharing some of them with you. Here's the first one. It was originally just a swirl, which looked more like an "s" and turned into the word shine.

Shining is such a positive thing; no one wants to be dull, right? Enjoy.

The Road to Recovery

I never imagined that a broken finger took such a long recovery period. EVER!

The initial break wasn't too bad. I know what you're thinking if you saw the pictures, but it happened so quickly that I didn't have time to stress about it. For me, it was the three days following my ER visit that really kicked my butt. My fingers swelled up like sausages inside of a pretty tight cast, which obviously made my whole hand hurt.

My mom took me to the orthopedist the next day for some follow up. He checked out the x-rays, deemed the setting the ER doc did good, and told me to come back in nine days to see how I was healing. I was in tons of pain, so I was really happy he didn't mess with the finger.

The next day I had planned to attempt to go to work, but a new symptom hit me. I developed some severe chest pains every time I took a deep breath. Maybe I'm a little paranoid when it comes to my health, but I wanted to get it checked out. Mom drove me to another appointment. Apparently, I bruised some chest muscles when I smacked the pavement, so that was the cause of the additional pain. This was worse than the hand for a few days because it made every movement when I was laying in bed difficult and excruciating.

The next Friday, I had my next orthopedist appointment, and my finger was healing crooked. He schedule the surgery for the following Monday to place a pin in my finger. The surgery went smoothly (not like I would know if it didn't), and I got another cast that would stay on for an additional two weeks. Can I just say, having a cast is no fun?

Two weeks later the cast was cut off and the pin removed with no numbing whatsoever. Yikes! Actually, it didn't hurt at all.

Then, the therapy began, which I'll share more about later. Now for the good stuff...pictures.

Reflecting: One Year Later

Time has really flown by; it was a year ago, today, that I lost my job.

It has been a rocky year for me.

To be truthful, I was devastated and extremely hurt by the way I was "let go." It caught me completely by surprised and really rocked the security of my little world. I immediately wanted to run from all the people who hurt me and never look back. However, I've always felt God prompting me to face my problems and not run away from them. I could never truly express to anyone, just how tough the road was for me this year. I was doing everything in my power to hold myself together, and if I allowed one little crack in my wall, the floodgates of what might flow out could not be contained. In addition, no one but me seemed to understand how big of a deal this was...like I should be able to get over it quickly.

I've experienced a whole range of emotions, as most people would. I've been bitter, angry, jealous, torn, frustrated, and so much more. All the while attempting to remind myself of the promises of God and know that He had a plan...even in this.

Even now, I'm not over it.

I still don't have an answer for any of my why's? I'm not sure if I ever will on this earth. I still have a hard time looking the people who hurt me in the eye, especially after they moved on so quickly. I still pretend and say that I'm "okay," when they ask, even if I'm not. I mean, what's a girl really to do in this scenario? My world stopped turning, but theirs kept on moving, leaving me completely in the dust. My turmoil as a result of their actions seemed to have absolutely no affect on them.

I've been trying to move on, but what does that look like for me? I've prayed about forgiveness, focused on my job and my relationship with God. Funny thing is that God has been pretty quiet.

I'm definitely ready to not just be putting one foot in front of the other. I want my joy back; more importantly, I want to thrive in whatever circumstances God has placed in front of me. Trust me, I realize things could be so much worse.

Despite that, I'm always hoping for more...from myself and the people in my life. It has been one long year, but God has put some great friends in my life. They have helped me to laugh when I've wanted to cry, treated me to dinner when I jobless, put up with my moods, and most importantly stood by my side. To those folks, I couldn't have made it through this year without you.

And...I'm moving on, and I don't know what that looks like. I'm sure there will be more bumps in the road on this journey, but I'm ready. This is just one of the songs that I've enjoyed in the last few months.

Busted Phalange!

As I'm sure you've realized, I haven't posted in quite some time. I haven't been able to type for the last 6 weeks, and it is still a little sketchy.

Back on July 6, I went out cycling, and had a bike accident. I don't really know what happened, but I fell. When I peeled myself off of the concrete from a face down position, my left pinky finger was broken in an unlikely way. It was stuck in a crooked position, and I knew the a visit to the ER was imminent.

However, I was out by myself, and had to "effect self rescue" as the guys on Dual Survival would say. Thankfully, I has my trusty iphone with me. I dug it out of my bike bag and called my parents; but, they were working in the yard and didn't here the phone. My brother was much further away (20 mi.) , but I called him anyway. He answered the phone and began to make his way to me. He was definitely my hero that night.

While waiting for him a couple things happened. Nice people came by and moved my bike out of the way of other traffic on the levee, checked on me, and offered to go by my house to tell my parents. Me, being a photographer, felt the urge to share a picture of my broken finger on Facebook. Some people appreciated this, some were horrified by the picture, and others were horrified that I was taking pictures instead of crying. After that, I had to make my way to a spot where Chris could pick me up, so I walked my bike with my right hand about 1/2 a mile with my phone tucked under my left arm with the mangled finger to be ready for his call.

I spent the evening in the ER, and the staff at West Jeff was pretty great. My brother was so freaked the whole time because he doesn't like hospitals, but he was a trooper hanging out with me there. I did my best to entertain him, even though that bothered him as well...I guess he thought I should cry or something because of the swelling and relentless throbbing of my finger.

Obviously, I left the hospital late that night with a reset finger, my arm in a cast, and a handy prescription for anti-nausea and pain medicine. I was pretty out of it from being sedated for the resetting portion of the evening, but the family got me home and into bed.

Then, the road to recovery began, but more about that in future posts. I've been documenting the process, so here are three images from the beginning. The initial shot I posted to Facebook (a little blurry but my hand was shaking), a better one I forced my brother to take while waiting in the ER, and the first of my three casts. Enjoy!

Cody & Emily

Cody and Emily are two of my friends. Emily recently posted on Facebook to Cody that they needed some pictures. You can bet that I interjected and offered up my services, which got Emily very excited. At about that time, Cody got nervous; he doesn't like pictures.

On the day of the shoot the weather was temperamental. At the last minute, we deemed the weather good enough to go out photographing. Yay! Apparently, Cody didn't share my enthusiasm because I found out that he had been literally praying for rain all afternoon. This just cracked me up, and I had to laugh at how much he wanted to put this off for a little longer.

Despite all of the obstacles...I had a blast. Emily and Cody are both gorgeous people, so making images of them was a breeze. Especially Emily, I was actually getting annoyed when editing at just how darn cute she was in every photo...even the ones where she was talking. That's just not fair! :)

I Heart Japan!

...even though I've never been anywhere except the airport. I was supposed to spend two years of my life there, but it didn't work out. Japan is definitely on my unspoken bucket list; I must go before I die.

You can imagine my surprise when I found out that my friend Natalee is part Japanese. I've been wanting to do a Japanese inspired shoot for awhile, and she was a perfect person to be part of bringing to reality.

We went to several less urban spots in the city that lent themselves to a prettier backdrop than my normal grunge and graffiti. One spot off of Metairie Road even had bamboo; it was perfect.

As always, I had a blast with Natalee, and Lydia came along to provide laughs and support to the shoot. I absolutely adore the results. I have to give a shout out to Caroline for making the flower we used in Natalee's hair out of coffee filters...isn't that just amazing?

Ben & Sarah

My friend Allison is one member of a family of four; she happens to be the mom. Her kids are each unique and full of personality.

Her son, Ben, warmed up to after the initial time that we met. His expression and the way he says my name delight me each and every time I see his smiling face.

On the other hand, her daughter Sarah took several months to even begin to tolerate me, and even then she still had moments where I wasn't her favorite. Thankfully, she's grown up a little and has realized that I'm pretty cool...ha, ha!

I spent a morning with them recently for a photo session. Originally, Allison wanted to go to the zoo, but I'm a pretty firm believer in not trying to have a photo session at a place where kids are normally allowed to go nuts. Parents never want their children going nuts during a photo session they're paying me to shoot. :)

We agreed to try out the Marigny for our location, and I think we were both more than pleased with the results. The kids were superb and really cooperative, which makes my job much easier.

The only hiccup in our time together was when some lady pulled up next to us and yelled at me for being a bad mother. One, I couldn't figure out why she was so angry because I was the one laying in the street...the kids were safe and secure on the sidewalk. Two, last time I checked, I'm not a mother. It was interesting and just another reminder of how insane and great it is to live in New Orleans.

Awkwardness

Awkwardness...it's part of life; well, at least my life. Not because I'm the awkward one, although I do have my moments.

It rears its ugly and sometimes entertaining head everywhere I go. I wish I could just poke fun at the situations I encounter, but sometimes they're just down right embarrassing.

For me, it's easier when I'm the one caught in an awkward moment; I can laugh at myself. Sometimes, I feel so bad for other people when they just can't help it...it's their middle name.

Do you, like me, experience these all too common treats in your everyday life? I'd LOVE to hear what they are; here are a few things I find awkward lately:

1. Eating in silence with someone else present in the lunch room at work.

2. People who don't understand social cues.

3. Jokes that are completely inappropriate.

4. Customers who tell me they're going to make me a better designer, even though they have no
education or experience. Just the sheer greatness of who they are MUST rub off.

5. Keeping secrets when someone asks me a direct question related to what I know and pretend not to.

6. Trying to hide from certain customers because the sight of them strikes fear into my heart.

7. When I don't get my bosses jokes, and he doesn't get mine.

8. Any time a customer makes a reference to taking you on a date or directly asks you out. There's NO
good answer.

9. When two close friends are arguing in my presence.

10. Hearing people use the bathroom because the lunch room is so silent.

These are the first things that came to mind. I hope you comment and share your favorite awkward moments of yourself or the people in your life.

Me & My Bro

I tried to think out of the box this year for Mother's Day. My mom loves to read, but I'm tired of trying to find books that she hasn't read. It was time to get creative.

I also had this other small problem. We still had my senior portrait hanging in our living room, and lets just say that it has been awhile since high school.

To kill two birds with one stone, I thought it would be fun for my brother and I to have new, updated photos made for my mom. My brother would have also loved this idea too, if it didn't require him to be in the photos. Needless to say, he survived.

My friend, Joe, took some great shots of us, and I wanted to give everyone a peak. I really appreciate Joe giving up a couple hours to make this happen at the last minute. Plus, it was fun to spend some time with him too.

Josephine is sweet little girl. I met her and her family out at Audubon Park for our session, and we had an interesting time.

There were tons of people out at the park, so we spent a lot of time avoiding them and trying to get shots without them in the background. It was a challenge, but I love a good challenge. It's always good to improve by figuring out solutions to lighting and environmental situations.

We hoped to get more shots of J in the grass, but she just couldn't stop herself from trying to eat everything in site. Leaves, grass, sticks...anything and everything went into her mouth and was promptly retrieved by mom.

It was a great afternoon with a super family.

Jean Lafitte Part One

On a nice, cool day a few weeks back, I decided to head out to Jean Lafitte National Park. There's a nice trail, and I hoping to enjoy the scenery and see some gators. Oh yeah! Maggie and Maria tagged along with me for the adventure.

Maggie was a regular ole eagle eye, spotting all kinds of creatures. We saw a nutria, snakes, deer, frogs, lizards, and gators of course. A family that was out there spotted a snake eating a frog, so we stopped to watch nature take its course. It was gruesome and amazing all at the same time.

There was also a really hot park ranger out on the trail, which was a bonus in my book. I definitely considered calling to set up a tour with this ranger that shall remain nameless. :)

You should head out there for an afternoon; it's great. If not to see some amazing wildlife, there's a chance you might run into a very attractive park ranger...just sayin'. Plus, there's always something new to discover or explore.

For awhile now, I've been trying to get more experience photographing newborns. To gain the experience, I've been offering to take pictures for my friends who have newborns.

I had plans to shoot newborns shots after my friends, Jenny and Shane had their son. However, he was born with some lung issues that required him to be in the hospital for a couple weeks after his birth.

We finally made plans to take some pictures when Brayden turned six months. We had the date and time set when Brayden got sick and was placed in the hospital again. Eventually, B was well and we got our pictures.

He was a real champ through the whole session. It took him awhile to warm up to the camera. He would smile at me, but as soon as I would raise the camera he became expressionless. Jenny and Shane worked hard to get some good expressions, so that I could capture them. He was at the perfect age where he could sit up but not crawl; that's one of my favorite stages to photograph.

My co-worker lent me her infrared camera awhile back for me to experiment. It was nice to challenge myself with something different and capture new, different images of some of my favorite places in the city. It helped me to see things in a whole new light.

There was definitely a learning curve for me. At first I wanted to shoot things with lots of color, but the color looked completely with the infrared. Eventually, I started to think in terms of black and white film, and that really helped me to wrap my mind around making better photographs.

I'm usually a purist when it comes to photography. I don't like to use a lot of filters and adjustments on my portraits; I love it when things look like real life. These photos are not like my portraits at all. As you'll see, the brownish toned photographs are the color straight out of camera. The blue or greened toned images were adjusted with the channel mixer in photoshop. All of these were shot on ISO 100.

Every Girl Must Know

Or, at least should know how to change a tire. My dad taught me, before I was allowed to drive away my junior year of college in my new-to-me 1994 turquoise Saturn. Sweet! Not so sure what I would recall of that lesson today from ten years ago.

Yesterday I had to change a tire, but thankfully, it was not on my car. My bike had a flat. I'm not sure where it came from, but alas, it was flat. Maria had come over to go riding with me, so I was determined to change it. Needless to say, dad never taught me how to change a flat bike tire.

I've never been so happy to be at home because I consulted the internet. It was minimally helpful, and I set to work. There were some bumps along the way (letting some of the air out twice), but I got it done...eventually. I was really nervous when I hopped on at the beginning of our ride; surely, I had done something ignorant and the front wheel would fall off at any moment, sending me soaring over the handle bars into the hard concrete. Good thing I was rocking my bike helmet (shout out to Meagan for telling me to protect my brain) for the journey.

Thankfully, everything went smoothly, until...

Maria got a flat on the ride home with my other bike. We walked the rest of the way to my house.

Bruneau Boys and Dog

I have to admit that I shuddered a little on the inside when one of my new clients mentioned bringing their puppy along on the session with her two young boys. Thankfully, Gris-Gris, was the most well behaved puppy that I've ever encountered. She gave us absolutely no problems and even looked toward the camera for a few of the shots.

We had planned to start at City Park, but it was really crowded because it was the first warm day after some major cold weather. As a result, we ended up at a really sweet spot in Bayou St. John.

Photographing this family was such a pleasure. They're great people and just plan fun as you'll see from a few of the photographs. I'm happy I had the privilege to capture these images and enjoy an amazing afternoon.

Hipstamatic Days 1,2, & 3

As I mentioned last week, I'm going to be posting one picture shot with my iphone and the app Hipstamatic for the next 40 days. However, I have other stuff to post too, so today I'm posting the first three days.

On the first day, I was driving to work and saw an awesome, old school looking RV. I to make the block and come back and park for this shot. I wasn't inspired by anything exciting on the second day, so I took a picture of my chucks as I enjoyed the morning sunshine. Today, I was driving toward my brother's house and saw a cool building.

There's a learning curve to which camera, film, and flash are the best option for a particular photo. These aren't the best, but they're fun. Well, the RV was super cool, and it's still parked on Vets if you need your own photograph. The license plate is priceless; I only wish I had a close up of it.

Camera Apps...Oh My!

A customer came into the store today, and he was asking if I thought the quality of his photo was good enough to print as a 36x36 size. It was taken with his iphone, and at that size it was quite pixelated. Thankfully for him, it kind of worked with his image. It was a square photo with one of those cool vintage borders that I've been seeing on Facebook.

I've wanted to download another cool camera app, so I asked which app he was using. He made the plug for Hipstamatic. It seemed like a sweet application to have, so I decided to buy it tonight. It gives you the ability to switch lenses, film, or flashes. I haven't had the chance to really test it out yet, but I took a few photos to give you an idea.

So, if you're even remotely interested in taking better images of your dog, child, flowers, or a sunset with more variety, you should definitely check this out. We can go out shooting together, and you don't even need a fancy camera, just a fancy iphone.

There's also an app called Retro Camera Plus that has some vintage and polaroid options. It's not quite as versatile, but it is FREE. I downloaded both. I'm contemplating shooting one image a day with my phone using this new app for the entire 40 days of lent. Other folks are giving stuff up...I'm taking more pictures. :)

Mardi Gras!

I'm avoiding all parades this year and even downloaded a free app for my iphone to help me do so. :)

I'm really excited because tonight I'll be in another city visiting friends. It will be a short visit, but worth the 3.5 hours in my car both ways for the few precious hours with folks that I love dearly. Plus, I get to see one of my favorite kids on the planet! Hopefully, there will be pictures.

Back to the Grind

I'm trying to get back into shape, and I've been saying that for three months now. Today, I finally went out running for the first time in too long. It was a little painful, but it felt great.

I managed to squeak out about 2.5 miles, so I was thankful that I haven't lost everything. Now, I have to stay consistent and either wake up early or go immediately after work. My work schedule makes both of these difficult.

One thing that makes running better for me is music. I downloaded and created a new playlist to use, so that helps to motivate me.

A Sunday Adventure

I work at a camera store, so I look at photographs all day, every day. I see amazing images that I couldn't possibly have the patience to take. Sometimes I'm just lazy; I don't wait for the perfect lighting or have my camera with me at all the right moments.

At the store, we have this image of an old church to display the different sizes that we print, so that way the customers have a visual for what they're ordering. One of our customers finally explained how to get to this old church, so I went out there a few Sundays ago.

Let's just say, it wasn't as big as I thought it would be, and it's in much worse condition than when the picture we have on display was taken. It's it practically falling over. Maria came on this adventure with me to see what we could see. She actually braved the inside of the church, where I refused to enter. She kept telling me that the floor seemed fine, and I just laughed because I was intent on keeping all my limbs unbroken.

It was a blast enjoying a gorgeous spring day, riding with the windows down, listening to the music loud, and taking lots of images...it doesn't get much better than that.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I discovered a bookstore in the French Quarter. It's called Arcadian Books & Prints. It must have been the beat up exterior that initially drew me to the store, and then I saw the sign for "free books." Of course I had to further inspect what books the store was giving away for free...on the off chance there might be something I'd want.

However, then we went inside, and I was completely overwhelmed. It was cramped and dusty, and I immediately started sneezing. Being allergic to dust is really a downer sometimes. As you'll see from the photos below, there are mounds and mounds of books with seemingly no order at all. Two people cannot occupy the same space inside or even pass each other. Despite that, the guy working there assured me there was order in what I saw as chaos. It was also one of the most charming places I had been to in awhile. The charm was really in the chaos and history all stored up in one amazing place.

If you like to read, you should stop in and explore the collection. I'm sure you'll find something that you MUST buy and take home. If not, accompany a friend who will purchase a book; I know my friend April did. Or, you may just find a "free book" on the stoop that's perfect for your collection.

A Glorious Day

A couple of weekends ago, my friend April came to town. I was stoked for her to be hanging out with me. She was my roomie when we lived overseas, and we haven't seen each other much in the last 6 years.

On Friday, we went out and walked all around the Quarter. As usual, I brought my camera along and took pictures of our adventures on that perfect, cool, and sunny day. It was the most amazing weather...I couldn't get enough of it, but after about five hours we were done.

We went into the coolest little bookstore too, but more of those pictures later this week.

Eliana

I've known Brooke since we were kids. We went to the same dancing school, had mutual friends, and also went to college together. I helped her prepared for her wedding four years ago by designing her invitations and painstakingly sealing each one with waxy. I was there at 4 in the morning to assist with last minute details for her sunrise wedding ceremony...I'm a dedicated friend, what can I say? She's a good friend and totally worth it.

She and her husband had their daughter, Eliana, back in October. They just moved back here to be near Brooke's family, so we're getting reacquainted. Plus, I had the joy of shooting Eliana's three month portraits. The weather didn't cooperate, so we took shelter inside and made the best of it. She's adorable, and I promised Brooke not to talk about how sharp her fingernails felt on my face when I held her for the first time. :) I'm looking forward to the six month session outside somewhere...until then...

Lydia the Great

I've really enjoyed getting to know my new friend, Lydia. In just a short amount of time I've seen so many great qualities in her; some of them I envy for myself. She's kind, strong, encouraging, fun, honest, and so much more. In addition, I know God's working in her life, and I've seen her face life head on in these last few weeks.

I'm lucky to be her friend, and she's lucky I'm a photographer...one who was able to capture parts of her greatness and charm. I'm not going to lie; in some of these shots, I really feel that she looks like Michelle Pfeiffer from the movie Dangerous Minds. Unfortunately, she's too young to have any recollection of this movie. Gosh! I feel old.

I made a new friend recently, and I think she's pretty swell. She's part Japanese, and I really adore Japan (even though I still haven't checked visiting there off my bucket list). However, that's not why I became her friend; it was just a happy coincidence.

As what happens with most of my friends, I suggested we do a session. I like to shoot consistently, so I usually recruit my friends during slow times to keep things fresh. I spend most of my time photographing children, so it's nice to have a subject that can take a little direction. :)

We had a ton of fun at some new spots that I scouted, and we brought our other friend Lydia along too. Check back on Monday for my shots of her.

The Bennett Girls

I met up with the Bennetts a few weeks back at Storyland. Since I don't have children of my own, I couldn't remember the last time I had been there. I didn't really know what to expect, and I'm always nervous when a shoot is scheduled at a place where the kids normally play. Because you can guess what almost always happens...they want to play instead of have photographs taken...yep!

Thankfully, these chicas were pretty cooperative, and we had a fun time. I climbed up pirate ships, into Cinderella's carriage, and in lots of other child-sized spaces. Despite the inconsistent lighting as a result of the trees, I thought I got some shots that really captured each of their personalities.

The Graham Family

The Grahams and I met up in one of my favorite parts of town for their family session. They were all dressed to impress and coordinated so well. It always makes me excited when families do this without any direction from me.

It took a little while for their son to warm up to the camera, but after he did, his smile just couldn't be stopped. They were troopers through the session, walking all around, and as a result, we got some amazing shots. Cute Christmas

Christmas has already come and gone, and we're quickly approaching Valentine's Day. It was roughly a year ago that my friends were preparing to meet their daughter, Ellen. They were adopting her, and she was born at the beginning of February. So much could and should have gone wrong because of her biological mother's decisions, but she is perfect - their miracle baby that they prayed over and waited so long to embrace.

I gave them a portrait session as part of their gift after her arrival. It was originally intended because I was trying to gain more experience with newborns, but our schedules didn't meet up until this past Christmas. We had a great time at the Ritz with all of the Christmas decor, and I'm finally blogging these photos in honor of Ellie's upcoming 1st birthday. She's an absolute doll.

Sin We Don't Speak Of

I finally saw the movie The Village not that long ago. The characters in the movie are contained in a small community and fearful of "those they don't speak of," the apparent threat living right outside their perfect, safe, and cozy lives.

I've been thinking about that so much lately, especially in relation to my own life. Lets be honest, if you know me, my life has looked pretty crappy lately. As with most people, there is even more going on internally. There is something in my life that I believe is sin for me that isn't spoken of in church life today.

Food.

Ever since I can remember, I've always been overweight, chubby, big boned, etc... Whatever you want to call it; I've always struggled with food, even before I really knew it was a struggle for me. Other kids made fun of me, I tried to hide it, and I did my best to develop a "great personality."

Because of my "great personality," I always had lots of friends that kept me pretty grounded. For the most part, they kept me focused on what was important...what was on the inside. Of course I still believe that what's inside me is much more important than its packaging.

However, I always had Satan nagging me and reminding me that "you're not thin like the other girls, no one will love you because you aren't thin like them, you'll always be second best, etc..."

It is easy to feel this way in our culture where stick figures are flaunted as the only type of "beautiful" and what everyone should attain to be and look like. Our culture even promotes promiscuous dress for young women. Women in our culture today are begging to be notice and for all the wrong reasons. Why do we allow this world to dictate how we view ourselves and what we strive for?

Anyway, that's a little off subject. Back to the point.

For me, food is my problem. For me, food can too easily be sin in my life. In my life, it is powerful, hard to say no to, and it's everywhere. It's what we do in New Orleans...we eat, and then we eat some more.

I want to be the best me I can be for the sake of the kingdom and for living a fulfilled life, and for me, I can't do either of those well when I'm constantly worrying about food and my weight. I also want to be healthy, and fat Katie is not a healthy Katie. It's something I'm working on...constantly.

So where do I go from here? How do I make good choices for me? How do I keep from over indulging?

A friend told me awhile back that she was praying to want only good things. Me too, I want to desire good things for myself that build me up, make me better, that encourage me, help me to see the glass as half full, and that includes food.

I don't have all the answers, but I have a few scriptures that are helping me on my journey.

Isaiah 55:2
Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.

1 Corinthians 6:12
Everything is permissible for me-but not everything is beneficial.

Galatians 6:3
If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load.

I know this has been a long post, but I hope it gave you some insight, as it has for me. Also, let's start being more open about this because we give Satan ammunition by keeping it to ourselves.

Say Anything

Do you remember the movie Say Anything? It stars John Cusack, and at the end of the movie he is outside the girls window holding a boom box over his head. Yes, I said boom box, this movie was made in like 1989. If you're into older movies, this one is definitely worth watching.

At one of my recent shoots, one of the models broke out his own boom box. I was like....WHAAAT? However, his was an updated, super hip version of a boom box. Where the tape would normally go, you can slide in your ipod to project your tunes. It was so sweet, and I have pictures to prove it and the cool tennis shoes he was sporting that day. In addition, I went ahead and made him recreate the Say Anything pose...just for kicks.

Mehmet was a great sport, and he can hang around outside my window anytime. I'd love to know, what's your favorite old movie, and how did the guy get the girl back in the end?

For Megan!

One of my best friends, Megan, moved away a few months back. It was kind of devastating for me, even though she'd been preparing me for it during the two years she lived near me. They never planned to stay here long term. She also took her son and my favorite child in the world with her, imagine that? I miss them both terribly, but thankfully, they're not too far away. Hopefully, I'll be able to see them soon.

In the meantime, she asked me if I had any wrought iron photos because she wants to use them to decorate her bathroom. I can't remember half of what I have, so I decided to take some new ones...just for her to choose from. Joe & I went out roaming, and here are a few of the results. Are You Naughty or Nice?

Kids are a blast. It's easy for me to say that because I don't have any. :)

I worked on a Christmas card for my friend Allison that required us to get a naughty and a nice picture of her children. We had a short and hastily put together session in her front yard since my schedule was booked up.

Our naughty pictures turned into kind of ferocious instead, and many of them have kept me laughing, especially since her son is one of the most well behaved children I know.

Idols and Marriage.

It's an interesting combo.

A friend recently recommended I listen to a John Piper sermon called Single in Christ. It's John Piper, so I waited a little while because I wasn't sure if I could handle what he had to say. He's not exactly known for sugar coating the Gospel which I love listening to him. A good butt kicking from a sermon never hurt anyone, especially me. There's a link to the sermon above in case you want yours kicked too.

There's one thing that really stuck out to me. He makes a comment about how we've elevated marriage and given it idol status in America today. I had really never given a second thought to my desire for marriage getting in the way of me knowing Christ. Wow! He definitely dropped a bombshell on me because it's true. Society tells me it's better to be married, so I allow my personal desires for something as temporal as marriage to take the place or come before my desire to know God. Yikes!

I'm guilty! This was definitely a reminder, as I already know, that an idol is not just a statue made from wood. It can take so many different forms and even cause something good to become sin in your life.

Another thing is that I must be constantly probing myself for sin because sometimes we're just lazy about allowing it to remain in our lives. We don't take the time to ask God to show it to us because it's easier to keep it than deal with it.

Let's take the time to deal with our sin. I know it's something that I'm working on.

Ever Wonder?

I have a very strong desire to be great at my job, and this desire pushes me to learn new things, never settle for less, admit mistakes, and to keep striving to give 120%. The rest of my life could be completely chaotic, but my work life is organized, planned, and detailed. It's the only way to make sure all the different deadlines are met.

This causes me to ask myself sometimes, "Am I really good at what I do? Do people truly like my work?" Everyone must ask these types of questions, right? I mean...you'll know if your doctor isn't good because the results will be evident in your health. But, how do you know when your field is completely subjective like mine? I realize that this is partially answered by when clients continue to hire me or not, but how would you ever know without feedback?

The other day, I was reminded of how great if feels to be genuinely validated in what I do. No, my boss didn't tell me I'm terrific or anything (even though I am), but it came out of the blue from a close friend.

It was sincere, emphatic, and wasn't provoked by me. It absolutely made my day. So I'm giving a shout out to this anonymous friend and saying thanks.

Today, I'm going to try to make someone's day or at least encourage wherever I can. I hope you'll do the same because you never know when it will be just what the other person needs to hear.

And for crying out loud...take some pictures. :)

Howells

I met up with the Howells a few weeks ago for their Christmas shoot. I donated a session to Global Maritime Ministries for their annual fundraiser. They minister to the many port workers that come through New Orleans on a daily basis. The Howells bid and won the session that I had donated.

I was stoked for the opportunity to get to know a new family in the city, and we had a perfect, overcast day for the session. I have to admit; I love the cloudy days. Plus, they showed up some styling and coordinated outfits. Coordinated...not matching is the way to go in my mind.

We walked around the edge of the French Quarter and found some good spots that would work for their Christmas card. Here's a few of the highlights.

A funny thing happened...

As y'all know, I've been at my new job for almost a month, and part of my job is customer service. That requires that I'm nice to customers, right?

Apparently I was too nice last week because one of our customers asked me out for coffee. Normally, I'm not opposed to guys asking me out, but he seemed to be at least fifteen years older than me, not to mention that he had a roughly 11 year old boy in tow. In addition, I know I don't look my age, so he was essentially asking a 26 year old out, not an almost 31 year old. He is a perfectly nice guy, just unfortunately not the one for me.

Needless to say, it really took me by surprised, and I wasn't sure what to say. So, I stammered through some maybes, not right nows, and awkward laughing was also involved. Terrible, right? I realize that my friends are probably wondering if I was inhabiting my body because I'm usually a straight shooter in all circumstances. To my credit though, it was my 12th day of working in a row, so my mental wit was not at its peak.

So, I've got to know. Guys, what do you want to hear in this situation? Do you want a girl to just flat out say, "no thanks," if she's not interested. Or, would you prefer some sort of awkwardness like what transpired with me?

I need your thoughts. I want to be prepared in case this ever happens again! Also, I welcome dates with people closer to my age...just in case anyone was wondering. :)

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda

I should be updating, I know. However, it's Christmas, and I work in retail now. That means, no days off until the big day. I hope to be posting, but if I miss days here and there...you know why.

Another Comeaux Christmas!

It was my third year meeting up with the Comeauxs for a Christmas session. I can't believe how far I've come in three years and what I've learned. My desire is to grow twice as much in my photography during the next three years. And speaking of three, they're expecting baby boy number three. I'm crossing my fingers, and hoping they'll let me do a newborn session when the little guy arrives.

We met up at Fulton Street, as I mentioned last week. It was pretty cold and windy, but we made the most of the elements. Nathan was more cooperative than ever, so it was pretty easy to get some great shots of him. Little Josh needed a little coercing. Our method was skittle...yep, that's why he's chewing in 95% of the photos. He's a trooper, so I'm looking forward to another shoot once he's finally walking. Here's what our session yielded.

It's Christmas Time

It's Christmas time, and as a result, I have promptly changed my ringtone back to "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." It's not that I don't like the decor or the ever repetitive Christmas songs on the radio; however, sometimes it's all just a little too much for me.

I like to keep my Christmas simple, which depresses almost all of my friends. This means no tree, no decorating, reluctance to attend Christmas programs, and so much more. I know, I'm weird.

Despite all of this, I went to Fulton Street for a photo session. While I waited for the clients, I broke out my Lensbaby and took a few shots of the decor. There was also blizzard like snow...the kind where I could barely open my eyes. Intense.

All you Christmas lovers out there, eat your heart out because this will likely be the only Christmas post.

Senica Naturals

I have a secret, but I'm pretty sure everyone knows it. I'm really behind in my blogging. Arrghh! Time has just been getting away from me these past couple of weeks.

I had a session recently for Senica Naturals, a company that sells beauty products. They're in the process of rebranding and redesigning their website. Hopefully my photography will be featured on their redesigned site.

Everything commenced at the sculpture garden at City Park. It was my first time there, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the space. I want to get back in there soon for another session. Each of the models had their makeup done, and that took a little longer than we expected. As a result, we were shooting at one of the worst times of day...noon. We had to shoot in the shade. Despite my prayers for an overcast day, we were blessed with radiating sunshine the entire time. It was a really perfect day, and I had a great time getting to know some new folks. Today, I'm going to share an individual shot from each of the models who gave up almost their whole Saturday.

I've got two things.

One, no one has been commenting. I'm sad. What's up peeps; I need a little motivation that someone may actually read what I write, even if it is insanity.

Second, I've been a little out of pocket since I started my new job. If you're wondering, it's going well. The folks I work with are pretty cool, but I've decided I'm in some sort of hazing ritual. It is the busiest time of year where I work because of Christmas, so I would recommend beginning work in this time of year. It's nuts. I'm helping customers, even when I have mostly no clue what I'm doing. It has definitely been sink or swim for me, and I think my head is still above water for now. If that wasn't enough, I'm doing grunt work for the time being. I can't figure out if they put everyone through this regimented cycle of scanning, but I'm definitely there. I've been scanning pictures, slides, negatives for four days, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

On a positive note, I'm busy which is really good, even if it is monotonous. One of these days they'll let me out of the cage to put my degree and experience to work. Until then, scanning it is, and as my friend Maggie reminded me...

Whatever you do, work as though for the Lord and not for men. Enough said, I think.

Newborn Connor

I recently spent some time with my friend Ashley, her daughter, and her newborn baby boy, Connor. I really enjoyed photographing at their house because there was plenty of natural light. I was desperate for little Connor to go to sleep, so we could get those sweet, sleepy shots. It didn't happen. Those newborns must smell me coming because they refuse to sleep when I'm around. I don't know what it is, but they don't sleep. They wait until I leave and then immediately begin to snooze.

Moving Forward!

I'm working again, and I start today.

I'm not sure what my official title is, but I'll be doing design work at Bennett's Camera. They sell cameras and camera gear, process negatives and print reprints, print greeting or Christmas cards, photo books, and so much more. So, if you have some pictures you've been meaning to print or want to create a photo book for a loved one, you should stop by.

I'm very thankful for a full time job, and I'm looking forward to what the Lord has in store for me. I've been going back to a couple verses over and over again during this transition period.

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

I have a hard time forgetting things, especially if it was something painful. Sometimes I just allow little and meaningless things to open old wounds, but I can't live in the past. I have no control over what happened or will happen. It is what it is, so it's time to move forward, trusting God with the control.

Life is too short and too precious to dwell on the past. If you're hanging onto something, take a step forward with me and let it go. You won't miss the baggage...I promise!

Odds and Ends

The edge of the French Quarter and the Marigny are two of my favorite places to photograph. There's so much diversity, color, and personality; it seems like I'm always discovering something new. It's a great place to photograph families because of all the nooks and crannies, along with a great New Orleans feel.

I was scoping out a few spots there recently and took some photos of all the doors I came across. They're all so unique and fabulous, just like my clients.

My friend, Casee, and I grew up together and were constantly keeping each other laughing; we even have our own signature dance. We're super cool, right? Cool enough that I'm not planning to show anyone this dance...EVER!

These days we're both busy people, and she has a family now. We don't see each other very much, but we're still the same people. I really enjoyed catching up with her and hanging out on a recent shoot with her family. You may remember the session I did of her son when he was just three months old; he's grown up a lot since then and is a handsome little fellow. He was as busy as a bee, so we had a hard time keeping him interested for the family shots. Plus, we were in a hurry because LSU was playing.

Audlers

I met the Audlers out at City Park recently for a family session. Much to our surprise, their was a race that morning, so we had to slightly alter our plans. We figured it out, and a lot of fun commenced. Their kids are adorable and full of personality, and I enjoyed spending time with them.

Magnificent Obsession

I love Stephen Curtis Chapman...still. His album, Great Adventure, was one of my first CDs ever. On my way home tonight, I heard one of his songs on the radio, and it reminded me of Magnificent Obsession. This is my favorite of his albums, and the song for which the album is named always hits home with me. The lyrics always seem relevant to my life and challenge me to be better, especially, "cut through these chains that tie me down to so many lesser things, let all my dreams fall to the ground, until this one remains."

Am I willing to let my dreams die for the sake of the Gospel?

Idleness

You've probably heard me say before, "I don't idle well." Either I'm running full force into something exciting and adventurous or laying in my bed zoned out in front of the TV. I'm sure that I have days of inbetweeness, but for some reason I don't remember them.

I've been working at a daycare to supplement my income until I become a photography superstar. Ha, ha! It's highly unlikely that I'll ever be a superstar at anything, but I am striving to get better, in all areas of my life. Back to the daycare, my friend is out this week, so they asked me to work the front desk from 7:30-9:30 each morning. That's great and easy, but I'm bored. Apparently this isn't challenging enough for me or something. I mean, it's better than kids spitting up on my, but still boring. I don't do well with boring.

Go do something exciting today...just for me. I wish I could join you.

Teeny Tiny Goodness

Babies. I just can't get enough of them; they're so cuddly and sweet...that is, until it's time to be changed or fed. Thankfully, they're cuteness trumps all that other stuff.

I've been trying to hone the art of newborn photography. My friend Amy is an amazing photographer, and she's found a great niche for herself with newborns. Her work is great, so you should check her out.

While I'm still working on my skills in the newborn department, several of my friends have allowed me to photograph their little ones. Samuel was a little over two weeks old when these were taken. I wanted him to sleep, but he stayed awake instead...of course!

I'll Pray for You

Some friends showed me a video the other night that I'm sure everyone else in the world has already seen. Well, maybe not EVERYONE. If you've read anything I've written as of late, then you'll understand why this is hilarious. Not to mention that the guy in the video is good looking, and he does a heel click. He had me at the heel click. I know that sounds silly, but I love to do heel clicks...just a random fact you've been dying to learn about me. :)

My Life. It's a Mess.

As you know, I've been pretty inconsistent in my blog updates these past couple of weeks. My life is currently a mess. It's not messy in a bad way; there just isn't a daily routine. That's part of why I've been loving it, but it's also the reason I haven't exercised in three weeks too.

My mind has been in a thousand different places. I'm still processing the loss of my job, thinking about how to pay the bills, how do I grow my business, how do I become a better photographer, how to gain new clients, figuring out how to do work that makes me happy, etc...

It's a lot to take in!

Plus, I had the privilege to photograph an entire daycare. Not your typical sit on the stool, turn your head this way, and tilt your body that way type of shots. I did more of a lifestyle shoot with natural light. I was really nervous about how things would go and what props would work with which age group of children, but it turned out well. The day that I stop getting nervous is the day I stop doing my absolute best.

I've also been filling in at the above mentioned daycare. It started as a way to help some friends of mine and the people in charge fill the gaps during fall break for students, but I've been working quite frequently. I've had more fun than I ever thought I would, so I keep going back for more. It's helping to pay the bills, and still allows me time to pursue my dream.

I never imagined that I'd be doing what I'm doing right now, but one thing I've learned is that I limit myself. I kill the dream or idea before it ever even has a chance to take root and grow. Thankfully, God doesn't take my advice. He knows what I'm capable of, even when I doubt myself or other people say it can't be done. That's why he says in Isaiah 55:8-9...

'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

I don't know what you're dealing with or the challenges you're going through, but I'm confident of God's ability to pull us through and teach us something in the process. Keep your eyes fixed on Him; He won't let you down. His answer may look different than you expected, but he's always got your best interest at heart.

Craft Night & Photography

Tonight I'm participating in the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary's Craft Fair. Wahoo! I'll be promoting my photography and also selling cute frames and stationary...all for a mere $5 each...the crafts, not the photography. It's from 6-8 pm in the Hardin Student Center on campus.

In addition, I'll be offering a special photography session promotion. You'll have to stop by my table to find out exactly what it is, but I promise it's the best deal around. This offer will be limited to 50 people, so stop by early.

Some great friends of mine will be there too. Mandi will be selling cute flower pins, sugar scrubs, adorable tote bags, and more. Natalie will be rocking out tutus at the cheapest prices in town.

Pumpkin Carving

I haven't carved a pumpkin since my childhood, and even back then, I'm pretty sure I didn't carve it myself. Clearly my parents did all the heavy lifting by scraping it bone dry before triangle eyes, a triangle nose, and a jagged tooth smile was carved precisely in the right place.

I didn't realize what hard work it was to get all the gunk out of a pumpkin. It takes a lot of relentless scraping. Too much!

Pumpkin carving has come a long way since my childhood. It's an art form now with parts shaved away and other parts completely carved out. As an artist, I was totally intimidated to carve this sucker. I know that sounds crazy, but it's a lot of pressure to perform on the spot.

All it took was a little peer pressure to get me started on a completely random design. Despite knocking out a piece that I didn't plan on, I had a great time with my friends. They're cool, and they're smart. They used patterns to carve their pumpkins. Next year, I'm abandoning any artistic talent that I possess for a pattern.

Hayride

I recently had a blast when my friend Kristyn invited me to photograph her family's annual hayride. I haven't been on a hayride since my childhood, so I was pretty pumped about being there and photographing.

She had an area set aside in the pasture and spruced up for family photos. Each family in attendance came and had a family photo made. On the first family, I stepped back to frame up my shot and felt something squish. Yep, you guessed it; my left converse was in a cow patty. Lovely. It was an eventful start, and we kept the ball rolling with family after family. You can bet that I was more careful for the remainder of the evening to avoid those darn cow patties.

We roasted hot dogs and most of the adults watched the LSU game.

Once it got dark, Kristyn's dad brought his tractor around, and we piled in the back of the trailer. It was a gorgeous evening. It wasn't hot or cold, and the wind was blowing just enough to keep us all comfortable. As we rode along, we'd come to "ghosts" hanging in the trees. Each ghost was rigged to fall into the trailer and drop candy for the children. It was a blast.

We finished up the evening with s'mores. All I can say is, "yum!" Each of the new families I met were wonderful, and I was thankful for the privilege to share in all the fun.

Birthday Bliss

Last week was McKenzie's birthday, so I kept the day open in my schedule. She planned out a great day, and I tagged along for the ride.

I suggested that we ride the ferry over to the French Quarter because I thought it would be fun, and it was something she had never done. We got a fairly early start and after the ferry, we strolled several big blocks over to Croissant D'or for brunch.

Afterward, we made our way to Anthropologie. Ahhhhh! Then we hit up the movie "Life As We Know It." The movie was better than I expected, so we had a grand time watching it while devouring a boatload of popcorn. I really love that stuff, even though I'm sure it's doing something bad to my body.

We finished up the day with Bible study and then dinner at Tracy's on Magazine. The food was fantastic, but make sure to bring cash if you plan to eat there. As usual, I wasn't prepared.

It was a very full day filled with friendship, fun, and laughter. I'm so thankful to have such a great friend who keeps me in stitches.

Oh How I Love Thee...

I have one word for you.

Anthropologie. It is my absolute favorite store on earth. The great news is that we have one in New Orleans now. I was there last Thursday and was reminded of how extraordinary it is. Their clothes make me want to squeal with delight. McKenzie can vouch for me; I kept walking around, exhaling with an, "ahhhh" of shear contentment. I would live there if they'd allow me.

The store combines old & vintage with industrial and chic. It is super cool, so you should definitely check it out. I promise you'll want to spend some time there. The only down side is that most everything is pricey. Anthropologie is terrific, so save your dollars and head over. If you know my number, call me. I'd love to join you.

Chest Bump!

There's this phenomenon of dance moves, humping the air, chest bumping, and major rejoicing that happens during football games. It happens for the smallest things sometimes, and I wonder why they're so excited that they actual did their job correctly?

I would like to propose that the rest of the world begin to employ these techniques at their jobs; I think it would really spice up the workplace, don't you? The next time you finish teaching a lesson to students, writing a brief, delivering a baby, answering a phone call, cleaning your house, taking care of your kids, mowing the lawn, or anything else that you constitute as work, I hope you'll act like a football player and give a chest bump to someone nearby. The thought of my friend Maggie doing a happy dance in her law office makes me laugh a lot. I'm telling you; this could change our lives. :)

The next time I complete a design project or photo editing, I'm going to jump up and scream, do a happy dance, and then run to the living room to chest bump my mom. What do you think? Can we make this happen? I'm in!

It has been awhile since Joe and I have been out photographing together. The weather got unbearably hot, so we took a break for the summer. There was a brief reprieve from the heat, so I suggested we head out for a shoot. Kristin was nice enough to model for us.

She's interesting and was a great sport for these photos; she really couldn't say, "No," since she's dating Joe. :) Well, she could have, but that just wouldn't have been any fun. I think if you ever hang around either of us; you should prepare to be photographed!

Then we enjoyed a great dinner at Cafe Freret. It was yummy goodness in a great, outside atmosphere.

Braniff

Even though I'm single, I attend a lot of birthday parties for children. One, because I'm usually the photographer, and two, because I have some really awesome married friends with children. Braniff's third birthday was a combination of the two. His mom and I are really great friends, and I also took some photographs of the festivities.

As always, there a spacewalk, which is my enemy as a photographer. You can't shoot through the mesh, and you can't take a clean shot inside because of all the jumping toddlers. :) They had the LSU game on that day, and Juliet felt the need to wear her Florida shirt. What was she thinking?

Choo Choo!

As I mentioned yesterday, Megan is cooler than cool. She scoped out a really sweet location for some additional portraits of H.

It was this old abandoned train. We had to trudge through some overgrown grass to get to this rusted, mustard yellow train car, but it was worth the effort. It wasn't an ideal time of day because the sun was super bright, but we managed to find a little bit of shade. H was very excited to be on a train, even if it wasn't going anywhere.

After that, we went to an old barn and dairy.

Alphabet Bathroom Project

My friend Megan is many things. She's a terrific mom and a working woman at the same time. She's smart, loves the Lord, and all things historic and vintage. In addition, she is the ultimate crafter.

She and her husband recently moved to a new city where they have a house to decorate. I'm totally jealous that she has so much space, and she has done an amazing job decorating it so far. I should have documented all the greatness to share with you here, but alas, I did not.

During my visit, we worked on one of her projects. We (meaning mostly her) made the entire alphabet for H's bathroom. I was there for moral support and great at handing her nails for hanging each letter. I wasn't able to capture the entire bathroom in one shot, but I hope you appreciate the idea all the same.

Football With H!

Some great friends of mine recently moved away and took their son with them (obviously). While sifting through all of my photos lately, I realized how much I miss my friends and their son. Two months is the longest amount of time I've gone without enjoying the company of this little guy and that is just too long for me.

Instead of wallowing, I made a trip to visit them. Here's a few of the pictures from our time together. I'll be posting more of them sometime later this week.

I'm driving back from visiting friends today. I had to post this ahead of time because of the new "no texting while driving policy." Not that I could actually write a whole post via the iphone and manage to keep my car on the road too.

My friends Jon and Kelsey own a company called FocalPoint Cinematic Weddings. They're amazing, so you should definitely check them out in general or if you have an upcoming wedding. They did some work on a video called "The Dork Anthem," which I enjoyed and decided to share with you today.

Turning Three.

I spent Sunday afternoon hanging with some friends at the birthday party of my friend Natalie's daughter, Evie. She is so adorable and was even rocking sequin leggings at the party. I realize that some of you want to run out to buy a pair right now, but you must stop yourself. Only little girls under 10 can come near something so bright and shiny.

Can You Feel It?

I walked outside yesterday morning and was instantly a little excited. It wasn't about what I felt, but it was the absence of what I normally feel. Humidity. That brief little break in the unbearable heat gave way that change is on the horizon. Fall is SO close, and I couldn't be happier.

Cooler weather is coming, which means lots of great things. It's walking to my car without sweating, it's amazing photography weather, it's picnics on the lakefront, it's jackets and cardigans, and it's cute winter clothing. Yay!

I'm out of town visiting friends, but check back tomorrow for a few pictures of Evie's birthday party.

Sweet Laney

Remember my friend, Lily, from yesterday. Well, we were really out at the park getting pictures of her little sister.

I got in early with this one; I've been around since the beginning. I took pictures of her when she was just 7 days old. If my friend Andrew doesn't steal her heart first, I think I might have a chance.

Laney was a trooper, considering that she hasn't completely mastered the skill of sitting on her own for more than a few seconds at a time. Thankfully, Lily was there to fulfill her big sister role by keeping her laughing, and I was able to capture some great photos with her help.

Friendship in the Smallest Form

It has taken a couple years of cultivation, but my friend, Melissa's, daughter has decided she likes me. I am so stoked! After our shoot the other day, she invited me to stay over for awhile. At the time that I said, "Yes," I didn't realize that I had some special treats in store for me.

She was quite the hostess and fixed me a glass of water, even though she isn't tall enough to see whether or not the cup is going to overflow. She offered to comb my hair, and then she proceeded to do my makeup. She chose a lovely burgundy eye shadow and chocolate lipstick for me; thankfully, there isn't a picture to commemorate our fun together. We almost took one, but I refused to be in a picture alone, especially after my gorgeous makeover.
